…always backup your blog or website and never rely on hosting providers!
Many of you have been asking where Pyjama School disappeared to for the last month or so. Well, the answer is my hosting company closed down or went bust, I don’t really know which as I was never actually able to make contact with them! I should have noticed the warning signs, but I didn’t put two and two together until it was too late. One day I went to write a post and my blog was gone.
I write this blog mostly for myself. I’ve never been any good at keeping handwritten diaries, but this blog is full of memories and records of our family life. I love looking back through it, and the fact that other people read it and find it useful is just a bonus. So when I realised it was all lost, I was devastated.
First of all came denial. I refreshed the page every day, convincing myself that it was just a glitch and everything would soon be back to normal. Then anger, as I frantically made telephone calls to disconnected numbers, searched the internet for any clue that might enable me to make contact with the company directors, and filed complaints with watchdog organisations. Eventually I hit detachment. Overwhelmed at the task of rebuilding the blog, I considered just giving up. It was messages from readers, especially two thanking me because Pyjama School had been a massive influence in their decision to home educate, that encouraged me to keep trying.
I was finally able to reclaim my domain name and use my old wordpress.com site to import archived posts, but most of my newer content since moving to a hosted site in August last year was lost forever. However, a lovely reader called Claire contacted me to say that she subscribed by email and still had twelve of my most recent posts in her inbox, which she kindly forwarded to me. It’s a long shot, but if anyone reading this happens to be a subscriber and still has any posts between August and November 2013, I would be incredibly grateful! Edit: Several of you have since sent me the remaining posts, so nearly everything that possibly can be retrieved (without having access to the server data) has been! Thank you so much Claire, Marie-Louise, Joey and Ailsa for taking the time to help, as well as all the others who offered.
It’s going to take me a while to rebuild the site properly, so please excuse any missing images and the rather bare look. In the meantime, I will be holding a giveaway to celebrate being back online, so check back again soon! And don’t forget to backup your blogs! 😉
