I set up this invitation to play using homemade playdough, dyed conchiglie pasta and coloured matchsticks, inspired by this post from Nurture Store. Please excuse the poor quality photos, it was pouring with rain this morning and my phone doesn’t cope well in bad light!
The children ranged in age from 12 months to nearly 6 years old. I quickly decorated my own tree to remind the littlest ones how to press objects into the dough.
Little M poked and prodded and pushed and pulled.
Little F decorated her tree with pasta “leaves” and matchsticks.
Tabitha noticed that removing the pasta left leaf-like imprints.
She used the red playdough to add apples to her own tree and then created a person.
Aaron created a rather complex scene with grass, earth, flowers, sunshine, a butterfly and a snake.
They kept coming back to it throughout the day, trying out different ideas and tools. When the different dough colours got mixed together it created a beautiful marbled effect, just like real autumn leaves.
